Calls for legislation to vest all lands in State

A Civil Engineer, Ben Arthur, has suggested that Parliament should pass a law to vest all lands in Ghana in the hands of the State.  

This is to resolve  land litigation and threat from land guards.  

In acquiring the lands government he stated must pay compensation to all the families and stools holding lands in trust for their people.  

Mr. Arthur made the suggestion on our Current Affairs programme "Focus" which discussed, the numerous complaints concerning land acquisition and registration in Ghana.  

Mr. Arthur said taking over of lands in the country will also lessen the burden on the Lands Commission and litigations at the Courts.

The Director of Public and Vested Lands Management Division at the Lands Commission, Kofi Owusu-Poku, said stools and families must be checked through law and proper procedures on multiple sale of lands. 

He said existing laws must be enforced to bring sanity to acquisition of lands.  

He also advised land buyers to do due diligence when acquiring a piece  of land.

Senior Legal Officer at the Lands Commission, Mrs. Veronica Frimpong said only few stool lands have titles.  

She urged stools who have no title to their lands to register such lands with the Commission.  

Mrs. Frimpong said it now takes six months for one to go through the process to get a parcel of land registered.
