UNEP, Ghana to develop cycling and walkways action plan

The UN Environment Programme is supporting Ghana to develop a Cycling and Walking Action Plan and Strategy by the end of this year. 

This plan is to encourage the government to designate space for pedestrian walkways and pavements for bikes to reduce the incessant carnage on the roads. In respect of this, the first meeting between the Organisation, Ministry of Transport and Road Safety Commission will take place next month.

The objective of the meeting is for UNEP to identity what the issue are for pedestrians and cyclists, and why there is no investment regarding construction of pedestrian walkways and pavements for bikes. 

A Programmes Officer of the UNEP, in charge of Share The Road Programme, Carly Koinange, in an interview with Joyce Gyekye in Kenya during the Africa Mobility week said with the right leaders and the political will championing for cycling the continent will be successful in bike sharing like Asia and europe are doing. 

She said the UN Environment Programme has the technical knowlege and the finance to assist government to develope roads that are human centered and not just for vehicles.
