Lack of Ambulance hampering quality healthcare delivery in Bawku 

The lack of ambulance at the Bawku Government Hospital in the Bawku Municipal Assembly of the Upper East Region has increased death rates in the facility. 

The facility has no ambulance to cater for the needs of critical referrals over the past decades. 

The Bawku Hospital serves as a referral centre for other districts, namely Garu, Pusiga, Binduri and Bawku West Districts. 

Information gathered revealed that a lot of lives have been lost due to the absence of ambulance service to quickly transport critical referral patients to other major hospitals to access healthcare. 

Patients in critical conditions such as accidental, complicated labour cases, surgical and other special cases who need to be referred are always under threat for the lack of an ambulance to convey such persons to the referral centers. 

Speaking to Radio Ghana’s Samuel Ayammah from USA, a native of  Bawku, Mbawuni Bakutoma, expressed worry about the use of all manner of vehicles as ambulances in the area. 

He said the hospital is in a deplorable state since it lacks almost all the needed working materials. 

Mr. Bakutoma called on government through the Ministry of Health to as a matter of urgency provide the hospital with an ambulance. 

Mr. Bakutoma said the youth in Bawku has opened a Bank account with the Ghana Commercial Bank to solicit funds towards the purchase of an ambulance for the hospital. 

He said the name of the Bank account is Bawku ambulance fund. 

Mr. Bakutoma stated that there is an interim management committee set-up the youth to steer the affairs of the youth group.  

The account number is 148101020696, Ghana Commercial Bank and the name of the fund is Bawku ambulance fund.
