KMA closes down popular restaurant over poor food hygiene The Food Hygiene and Hospitality Industry Department, a subsidiary of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has closed down a popular Kumasi-based restaurant, PLUS TWO LOCAL DISHES. According to the Kumasi Metro Environmental Health Officer, Don Awanteungo, the closure followed several warnings given to the management and staff of the restaurant to observe food hygiene practices, which have gone unheeded. During an inspection tour of the restaurant with journalists, it was observed that a gutter just behind the kitchen was choked and a heap of refuse was behind the kitchen. Two small filters which sieve water from the water tank to the kitchen were also very dirty and unhygienic for food preparation. Mr. Awanteungo warned all food vendors and restaurant operators that his office will not countenance recalcitrance to strict environmental sanitation and hygiene especially as it has done enough sensitization in this respect, adding that the mandate of the Department is backed by the Public Health Act. The Manager of PLUS TWO LOCAL DISHES, Foster Kwakye later in an interview, claimed that all the directives given by the Environmental Health Department had been duly complied with.
