US Embassy Honors Two distinguished Ghanaians 

Two distinguished Ghanaians have been honored with the 2018 Martin Luther King Junior Awards for Peace and Social Justice.  

They are Director of ABANTU for Development, Dr. Rose Mensa-Kutin and President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, Yaw Ofori Debra. 

Conferring the Awards on them, US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson, said the award is given based on the effort  Dr. King put  in to build the culture of peace, dialogue and conflict resolution, while promoting respect for human rights.  

GBC's Rebecca Ekpe reports that Human Rights Activist Martin Luther King once said: "If you can't fly, then run. If you can't walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward". 

This forward movement is what has earned the Director of ABANTU for Development, Dr. Rose Mensa-Kutin and President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, Yaw Owusu-Debra, this year's Martin Luther King Junior Award For Social Justice. 

Dr. Rose Mensa-Kutin was recognized for bearing the torch of women's rights in Ghana and for her mentoring role for future female Leaders. 

She dedicated the Award to her husband, Professor Kwame Kari-Kari and their children for the support. 

Described as a lifetime advocate to disability rights, Yaw Ofori Debra received praise among other things for aggressively pushing for reforms to facilitate access to the Disability Fund in the Assemblies Common Fund. 

His goal is creating a society without barriers. 

Mr. Debra dedicated his award to his wife and children for supporting him in the fight at ensuring an inclusive society. 

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson praised the awardees and reminded them that the greatness of a nation is not defined and shaped by its government, rather by its people. 

Past recipients of the Martin Luther King Junior Awards are; Dr. Gyimah -Boadi of the Center for Democratic Development, Executive Director, The Art Foundation, Mrs. Angela Dwamena- Aboagye and Executive Director, Institute For Democratic Governance, Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey.
