Zimbabwe's Emmerson Mnangagwa pardons 3,000 prisoners

Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has pardoned up to three thousand prisoners, in a move that could help ease overcrowding in the country's penal facilities.
 
All women, except those with life sentences, and all juvenile prisoners under the age of eighteen were granted amnesty. 

Zimbabwe's Prisons and Correctional Services told Journalists in the capital, Harare that prisoners with sentences under thirty-six months who have served a quarter of their term and are terminally ill will also be freed.

Zimbabwe's prisons currently hold about twenty thousand inmates, but have a capacity of only seventeen thousand.
