No military base in Ghana - US Embassy

The US Embassy in Accra has denied claims that America is establishing a military base in Ghana. 

A statement issued in Accra by the Embassy says the present status of Forces Agreement between the US and Ghana is a twenty year old one, and does not cover the current range and volume of bilateral exercises and assistance. 

It says the US is investing more than twenty million dollars in training and equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces. 

The statement adds that Ghana and the US are planning joint security exercises this year and that will require access to Ghana's military bases by the US Force, as well as all other participants from other nations. 

The Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has also refuted the claims, stressing that what he laid in Parliament yesterday (March 20), was a renewal of an already existing agreement between the two countries. 

The said agreement has been a matter of concern among many, raising fears that it may expose Ghana to terrorist attacks.
