UN expresses need for of all to respect right of persons with Down syndrome The World today celebrates people with Down syndrome. A naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been part of the human condition, and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics or health. Adequate access to health care, early intervention programmes and inclusive education, as well as appropriate research, are vital to the growth and development of the individual. The UN in 2011 declared 21st March as World Down Syndrome Day, to raise public awareness on Down syndrome. This year's observation marks the 13th Anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. The focus for this year is on how people with Down syndrome can make meaningful contributions throughout their lives, whether in schools, workplaces, living in the community, public and political life, culture, media, recreation, leisure and sport. As part of the global celebration, Down Syndrome International is bringing together people with the ailment and other stakeholders at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, to reach out to key employment stakeholders to ensure they see the benefits of enabling people with the disability to make meaningful contributions in their workplace as well as encourage stakeholders to help bring about positive change in people with down syndrome.
