38 Newly Created Districts Begin Operations Today; Expert Says Move Is Needless

All the thirty-eight newly created districts will start work today (March 15). The assemblies will operate from temporary office spaces provided by the government. 

Parliament in 2017 passed a Bill to allow the creation of the new districts to bring development closer to the people. 

The number of districts across the country now stands at 254.  

Meanwhile, the Head of Environmental Studies at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Fred Oduro Agyarko, says the creation and subsequent inauguration of the 38 new district assemblies is superfluous when the existing 216 assemblies are battling with so many challenges.  

He said government should have rather strengthen the existing assemblies to improve on their revenue generation than adding more districts. 

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, Mr. Agyarko said government must show enough commitment to the local government system.  

Mr. Agyarko said collection of statutory taxes is breeding corruption, because of lack of accountability.  

Mr. Agyarko noted that if the challenges of the district assemblies are not fixed Ghana will continue to wallow in under development. 

He suggested the use of ICT by the various assemblies.
