Burnt trucks: Dagbon Regent condemns act, calls for compensation for owners

The Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Na Yakubu Andani, has condemned the burning of vehicles belonging to sand winners at Afayili in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region. 

In a statement, the regent said such wanton violence appears to be at variance with the Rule of Law that the country cherishes and seek to promote. 

He said though he is concerned about the negative impact of sand winning on the environment and supports the President’s fight against galamsey, the burning of fourteen tipper trucks, an excavator and some motorbikes, is inhuman, considering the harsh economic conditions in the country.

The Kampakuya Na called for an investigation into the matter to prevent it from being repeated. He also called for the President’s intervention in the matter to compensate the owners of the burnt vehicles. 

He appealed to the victims and inhabitants of Afayili to remain calm and allow government to deal with the matter. Several chiefs and groups in the Northern Region have expressed their shock at the development.

Last Saturday (March 3), military personnel now identified as members of Operation Vanguard, burnt fourteen tipper trucks, an excavator and some motorbikes in the area.
