CPP calls for passage of Affirmative Action Bill


The Convention People's Party (CPP), has called for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law, in order to provide legal backing for systems and policies that give women equal participation in Ghana's development.

The First National Vice Chairperson of the CPP, Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim, said as Ghana marks her 61st anniversary of nationhood, there is the need for all and sundry to intensify their collective efforts to promote the cause of women in the country.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the sideline of the 61st Independence Day Parade at the Black Sstar Square in Accra, Hajia Ibrahim lauded the role of women in Ghana's liberation struggle.

She said the CPP is of the view that before women could fully participate in the nation's socio-economic development, there is the need for the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into Law.

"The passage of the Affirmative Action Bill is very very important. It will even ease things for us," she said.

She announced that on Wednesday, March 7, all women will embark on a route match from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to the Black Star Square in Accra, to draw attention to the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill and to mark International Women's Day, which falls on Thursdays, March 8.

She appealed to all women to come out in their numbers and take part in the route match.

She said women of the country are doing well, such that, we have a Lady Chief Justice and some others holding ministerial portfolios; adding that, however, there is more to be done in women empowerment.

She urged women not to shy away from politics and leadership roles.

She urged the Government to walk the talk by passing the Affirmative Action Bill into Law.
