Eastern Region GJA Launches Maiden Awards The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Michael Kofi Okyere-Baafi, has called for the urgent need for the Eastern Region with its enormous natural resources to be strategically positioned to enable it attract more investors. This according to him willlargely contribute in creating job opportunities for the people. Mr. Okyere-Baafi made this known at the launch of the Eastern Regional GJA awards on the theme “Reposition Eastern Region for investments and job creation: The Role of the Media”. The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) was established on August 15, 1949 and it was initially called the African Press to take over the colonial press in helping to promote the agenda of the national struggles. However, in 1969 the name of the Association was changed to its current name which now serves as an umbrella organization for all journalists in the country. The Association has nevertheless drawn its inspiration from the constitution to help promote and strengthen the right of its members. It is in light of this that, the Eastern Regional branch of the association has resolved and determined to chart the path of development journalism in their efforts to make the country a successful one. The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Michael Kofi Okyere-Baafi, revealed that, the Free Zones Board is almost through with preparation for an American investor to establish a magnificent pharmaceutical industry at Kwamoso in the Eastern Region. The Eastern Regional Chairman of GJA, Maxwell Kudekor noted that, Journalists will continue to hold people in authority accountable to Ghanaians and support government in its quest to implement policies that will help build the country. He further expressed his satisfaction that, the dream and expectations of most media practitioners in the region to institute the awards scheme has finally become a reality. Mr. Kudekor however, indicated that, the media in the Eastern Region for decades has proven to be formidable and paid their dues to the nation, stressing that, it is relevant for them to be recognized. The Eastern Regional GJA Awards which is the first of its kind will have the main event in the month of May this year and will award journalist in various categories including; Business, Mining, Rural Reporting, Road Safety Reporting and Sanitation Reporting. Other categories also include; Morning Show, Akan News Caster and Crime or Court reporting. A five member committee led by a Lecturer at the Koforidua Technical University, Awal Mohammed has promised to be fair in their vetting of deserving journalistic works. The Eastern Regional Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku, addressing media practitioners urged them to use their various platforms to compliment the efforts of the security services to help maintain peaceful coexistence among citizens in the country.
