African Ambassadors to UN demand apology from Trump over racist remarks

The African group of ambassadors to the United Nations led by Ghana's ambassador to the UN, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, has demanded an apology from Donald Trump, after the US president reportedly aimed a racist remark at Caribbean nations and Africa.  

Trump criticised immigration to his country from El Salvador, Haiti and the African continent, at a meeting with Congress members at the White House. 

The African Union Mission to the UN says it is extremely appalled at and strongly condemns the outrageous, racist and xenophobic remarks by the US President. 

The group has demanded a retraction and apology from Trump.  

The African Group met at 4:30 pm on Friday, January 12 and agreed on the text as a Group position. 

Ghana acting as chair of the group joined in the consensus and presented the statement on behalf of the group to the media soon after the meeting.
