Artistes Sue GBC Over Outstanding Royalties

Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has been served with a writ by the Ghana Music Rights Association (GHAMRO) for royalties it owes some members of GHAMRO since 2012. 

In its statement of claim, the Collective Management Organisation for music rights owners in Ghana argued that, the state broadcaster has defaulted in the payment of royalties for over five years in spite of many promptings to do the needful. 

GHAMRO also claims that GBC failed to obtain user licences for the communication use, performance through its musical works through its radio and TV subsidiaries and has as a result barred the state broadcaster from using it's musical works from it members for broadcast until it settles it's accumulative debt in full.

The Collective Management Organisation, headed by highlife musician, Rex Omar, has vowed to ensure that music right owners reap the benefits of their intellectual property while making sure that all users of musical works pay for the works they consume.

GHAMRO is an organisation registered under the laws of Ghana and further authorized by law to basically license, collect and distribute royalties for and on behalf of musicians, authors, composers and producers and publishers of musical works.
