Two remanded for illegal arrest and extortion An Accra Circuit Court has remanded an interdicted police man, Haruna Nangtoma and one Yakubu Mole for unlawfully arresting some four persons and demanding monies from them. Appearing before the court, the interdicted police officer, and his accomplice who is a driver’s assistant (mate) pleaded not guilty to the offence. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu told the court that, on December 25, last year, the accused persons at Madina in the Greater Accra Region allegedly arrested the four persons who were suspected to be smoking dried leaves presumed to be a narcotic drug. After the arrest, the accused persons told the relatives of the four persons whose presence the arrest took place to follow up for settlement. The accused persons demanded one thousand cedis from the four persons while they were being escorted. A call from a relative of one of the arrested persons compelled the accused persons to stop around Kwabenya roundabout for the settlement they had requested. The Kwabenya district police who had received information on the illegal arrest intercepted the meeting for the negotiations and subsequently arrested the accused persons.
