Ghana joins world to mark Tolerance Day November 16th every year is celebrated as World Tolerance Day. The day is observed to appreciate the diversity of the world's rich culture and tradition. It is also to show respect and accommodate each other. It is therefore imperative that politicians and their supporters tolerate each other as the country goes to the polls in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the NCCE reminds Ghanaians to promote tolerance as the nation prepares to go to the polls on December 7. A statement signed by the Communications and Corporate Affairs Director, Joyce Afutu said political activities so far have not been without incidents. The NCCE condemns in no uncertain terms the shameful act of pockets of violence that have characterised the electoral process particularly with regard to the limited voter registration exercise, transfer of votes, insults and attacks in the media landscape, violent clashes between the NDC and NPP; and recently the clash in front of the residence of the flag bearer of the NPP. The Commission calls on all political parties to show exemplary leadership by asserting positive political authority and values over their supporters. The Commission requests the Ghana Police Service to ensure the maintenance of law and order fairly in the run up to the elections. As the world marks International Tolerance Day, NCCE entreats all Ghanaians to tolerate divergent views, live in harmony with each other and foster national unity as enjoined by Article 41 (c) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. Citizens must show tolerance and an appreciation for the fundamental human rights of other people even as they enjoy their individual rights as citizens and residents of Ghana. The NCCE assures Ghanaians of its continuous and relentless efforts in the performance of its constitutional mandate to educate all citizens on their rights and obligations to embrace tolerance. Ghanaians must work towards ensuring peace before, during and after the presidential and parliamentary elections to consolidate the gains made in the country's democratic journey. GBC
