Gyamfi, Vinyo, Mortey to be crowned 2016 best farmers in cocoa, maize and agro-forestry

A farmer from Amadu Nkwanta in the Asunafo South District of the Brong Ahafo region, Mr Opoku Gyamfi is to be crowned as the 2016 National Best Farmer in cocoa.

Others expected to be awarded are Mr Kofi Vinyo of Odomase in the Sunyani West District of the Brong Ahafo Region, best national maize farmer and Mr Prosper Komla Mortey from Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo District in the Eastern Region, best Agro-forestry farmer of the year.

The national celebration of the 32nd Farmers’ Day is underway at Kintampo in Brong Ahafo with President John Dramani Mahama as the Guest of Honour.

More than 60 farmers are expected to be awarded during the function.

A list of awardees as contained in the brochure of the programme mentioned Messrs Opoku Gyamfi, Kofi Vinyo and Prosper Komla Mortey as best farmers in cocoa, maize and agro-forestry respectively.

In another development, Farmers and Fishers from six districts in the Central region have gathered at the Assin Fosu training college park to mark the 32nd Farmers and Fishers' Day. 

The farmers will be award winners received items such as tricycle, motor bikes, bicycles, wheel barrow, fishing net, spraying machines, refrigerators, aluminum basins, agro chemicals, plastic chairs, and wellington boots among others. 

The Farmers and Fisher-folks were drawn from Assin south, Twifo Atti Morkwaa, Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, Abura Asebu Kwamankese, Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Upper Denkyira East and Assin North districts. 

A fifty year old mixed crop farmer from Dunkwaw-on-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East District, John Coffie, has been adjudged the central regional best farmer. 

He takes home a tricycle, 32 inch LED T.V, Bags of fertilizers, Water Pump, Spraying Machine, travelling bag, Radio Set, among others. 

Interacting with Radio Ghana news, the Regional Best Farmer, John Coffie, was full of joy and urged all farmers to put in their best in developing the agricultural sector. 

Madam Sabina Agyei who was also adjudged the best rubber farmer in the cape coast metropolis, also urged government to support young people to venture into agriculture as a form of curtailing the unemployment situation in the country.
