Former GBC Boss, Eva Lokko Is Dead


A former Director General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (GBC) Eva Naa Merley Lokko is dead. 

Ms. Lokko was until her death the Progressive People's Party parliamentary aspirant for Osu Klottey Korle constituency.

An official of the party, Richmond Keelson confirmed her death to an Accra based FM, “Joy News” but will give further details.

She was the fourth woman to be chosen as a Vice-Presidential candidate since Ghana returned to a constitutional rule. She partnered the flagbearer of the PPP, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom in the 2012 presidential elections.

The National Independence Party (NIP) settled on Prof. Naa Afarley Sackeyfio, partnered Rev. Dr. Kwabena Darko.

In 2008, the People's National Convention (PNC) settled on Ms. Petra Maria Amegashie as Vice Presidential candidate, for Dr. Edward Mahama. 

Convention People’s Party (CPP), Dr. Abu Sakara Foster presented Nana Frimponmaa, as his running mate.
 
Ms. Eva Lokko attended Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast.

She was an engineer by profession and holds a master's degree in Intelligent Management Systems, System Analysis and Design.

Ms. Eva Lokko was the first Satellite Communications Engineer and the first woman engineer to be employed at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in 1972.

She was part of the engineering team that installed and maintained Ghana's first colour television infrastructure in 1985.

She also worked in over forty countries across the world in various capacities. 

She served as regional program coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme, (UNDP) initiative for Internet development in Africa. 

She worked with the United Nations for thirteen years and also served as chairperson of the UN Federation of International Civil Servants Association and the United Nations Staff Council and as a member of the UNDP News Advisory Board.

She was the Chief Executive Officer of Totally Youth, a Non-Governmental Organization based in Accra. 

In 2002, Ms. Eva Lokko was appointed Director-General of the GBC, becoming the first and only woman to hold that position.

Reports say the PPP and family will issue an official statement about her death and plans for her burial.
