Turkey declares state of emergency to last three months

Turkey has declared a state of emergency lasting three months. 

The decision comes five days after a failed coup and amid a major crackdown on the military, judiciary, academia and the civil service.

President Erdogan made the announcement after holding the first post-coup meetings with the National Security Council and the Cabinet saying the measures are in line with the constitution.

Erdogan announced that the purpose of the state of emergency ‘is to be able to take the most efficient steps to remove the threat as soon as possible.’

He added that Europeans have no right to criticise the decision.

While Turkey’s allies have expressed their solidarity with the government against the coup, they are also voicing concerns at the scale and speed of the crackdown and called on Ankara to abide by democratic values.

More than 200 people were killed and over a thousand injured during Friday’s attempt to remove the government from power.
