Defeated NDC’s Abuga Pele considers going independent

Following the defeat of Abuga Pele at the just ended NDC parliamentary primary in the Chiana-Paga constituency, the veteran legislator is considering going independent in the 2016 polls. 

The former GYEEDA boss told news men in the Upper East region that he will go solo only if his supporters want him to do so. 

Reports going round suggest that thousands of supporters of the defeated MP in the constituency are angry at his loss and as such have begun to clamour seriously for him to contest the general elections as an individual.

Abuga Pele went into last  Saturday’s primary with a limping foot because of his involvement in the alleged financial scandal at the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency, GYEEDA now Youth Employment Agency , YEA. Mr. Pele who is still standing trial over the alleged malfeasance   split the bean about his intention to go solo.

The sitting MP had 4,177 votes behind Rudolph Amenga-Etego who obtained 4,337 votes. 

While, some analysts say Mr. Pele's main opponent may have used his court trial to campaign against him in the run up to the primary, the veteran legislator says he did not lose the election. 

He alleged that there were some inaccuracies in the collation of the results as part of reasons for his defeat.

The sitting MP also revealed that some of the national executives of the party strongly backed his opponent’s candidature against his bid to return to parliament. 

Speaking to Radio Ghana, some supporters say they have resolved to have him go into the 2016 as an independent candidate not just to prove a point but also to ensure that the seat does not fall again into the hands of NPP. 

Some supporters are also of the view that the NDC now has four shaky seats that are likely to fall into the hands of the NPP with the Chiana-Paga being the latest to be considered insecure for the NDC. 

The existing three according to them, are Bolgatanga Central, Bongo and the Garu seats.
