UNDP/ MTN unveils ultra-modern ICT learning Centre at Pwalugu

As part of measures to bridge the digital divide, MTN foundation, a subsidiary of MTN Ghana which is by far the largest telecommunication network in Ghana has officially commissioned a modern ICT learning Centre at Pwalugu in the Upper East Region. 

The 20-seater facility stocked with laptop computers and other accessories will serve both students and the community. 

It is among other eight facilities jointly established by the Foundation with support from the UNDP. 

At the inaugural ceremony held at Pwalugu, the Executive Secretary of MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe said the provision of ICT facilities in parts of Northern Ghana is to improve the learning outcomes of students in ICT. 

He explained that technology has come of age and with the advancement of ICT, it has become highly imperative for MTN as a pillar in Ghana's telecommunication sector to actualize its vision of leading the delivery of a bold new digital world.

This, he added has informed the company's resolve to establish modern ICT centers in each region.

The UNDP/ MTN funded project, was initiated in 2013 to bridge the digital divide between the served and undeserved communities and also give equal opportunities for the youth especially children of school going age in deprived communities as those in the urban centres where the teaching and learning of ICT is highly visible. 

However, the facility will create the platform for children between the ages of 8-14 to read and enhance their literacy skills.  

The Executive Secretary of MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe said the overall development of any nation hinges on the improvement in ICT, emphasizing that ICT has become a necessity in managing information and knowledge in a fast changing world.  

He described the establishment of the project as unique especially in the era where the learning of ICT is considered examinable in most educational institutions including basic schools. 

Mr. Kuzoe was hopeful that the provision of the facility will impact greatly on pupils, teachers, students as well as businesses. 

Meanwhile, the commissioning of a similar facility at Tolon in the Northern Region, which, he revealed had impacted over 70,000 people in the area. 

In an interview with the Regional Territorial Sales Manager of MTN, Richard Asamane said will afford teachers the opportunity to undertake their research activities with ease. 

Children on the other hand will get easy access to online libraries which are host to thousands of educational resources that supports learning. 

While encouraging the youth to make productive use of the facility, Mr. Asamane moreover, challenged the community to take ownership of the facility and adopt a proper maintenance culture to prolong its lifespan.  

The chief and people of the Pwalugu Traditional Area were grateful to MTN for the gesture and indicated their readiness to adopt the Centre and ensure its proper utilization. 

The facility is expected to serve other adjoining communities such as Guborogo, Arigu, Karimenga, Bulungu, Shia and Yinduri.
