Ban Ki-Moon calls for global action to stop HIV/AIDS 

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has called for more action to halt the HIV epidemic to avoid backsliding on the progress made so far.  

This is because many people especially poorer communities do not have access to treatment. 

Mr. Ban was addressing the 21st International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, under the theme ‘'Access Equity Rights Now’'. 

GBC’s Correspondent Eunice Maasodong  reports that the over 18 thousand delegates are made up of scientists,  policy makers, advocates, media, youth and people living with HIV. 

The opening also marked the birth day of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela which the UN recognises as Nelson Mandela Day.
