UG launches Memoirs of late Prof Alexander Kwapong

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana - Legon, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has described the late Professor Alexander Kwapong, as a colossus of the Ghanaian education scene. 

Speaking at the launch of the Memoirs of the late Prof titled, "A life in Education", Prof. Aryeetey said the accounts as contained in the book are like gold dust. 

The Chairman of the University Council, Justice Prof Samuel Date-Bah also described Prof Kwapong, as his lifelong role model. 

He said the posthumous publication of his memoirs is a most welcome addition to the history of the growth and development of higher education in Ghana and Africa. 

Prof Kwapong was born in 1927 and died in 2014.

At age 39, he made history by becoming the first African Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, between 1966 and 1975. 

He was also a Vice Rector of the UN University in Tokyo Japan. 

The 500-page book provides an insight into his childhood and adolescent life, his time in the university as a student, lecturer and administrator both in Ghana and outside and also his life after retirement. 

The first copy was sold for GH¢10,000.
