Romanian Police detains 38 people suspected of enslaving young men


Romanian Police have detained 38 people suspected of holding dozens of vulnerable boys and young men like slaves for years. 

The victims were chained, forced to do various types of work, or fight each other for entertainment. 

The arrests took place following large-scale Police raids the day before in Berevoesti, 170 kilometres north of the capital, Bucharest. Five people, including two boys aged 10 and 12, were freed after the raids. 

The victims said their hands and feet were tied and they were told to eat off the ground or to fight each other to amuse the suspects.  

Prosecutors said since 2008, about 40 victims were captured in public places, near churches or train stations, or at their homes and forced to do household chores, look after animals, beg in the streets, and do illegal logging.
