Government to produce The Agreement for hosting 2 Gitmo detainees

Counsel for plaintiffs in the suit challenging the hosting of the two former Guatanamo Bay detainees, Nana Adjei Barfour Awuah, has filed an interlocutory application at the Supreme Court to compel government to produce the agreement which brought the two into the country. 

The plaintiff, Margaret Banful, a former Conference Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sued the Attorney General and the Ministry of the Interior and is praying the Supreme Court to declare government's decision to host the two former detainees as unconstitutional. 

In her writ, she argued that President John Mahama should have consulted Parliament before agreeing on the transfer of the two into the country. 

However, in a response to the application, Mrs Ziwu of the AG's Department said the only form of agreement between the two countries is a diplomatic communication known as note verbale which is unsigned. 

The Court has therefore ordered the state to produce the said agreement in-camera at the next hearing set for the 6th of next month.
