NDC, NPP others default in presenting audited accounts

The ruling NDC and the largest opposition  political party, are among 19 political parties that could not meet the Electoral Commission`s (EC`s) deadline for the submission of their audited accounts. 

As at the close of of the deadline, only seven political parties out of the 26 so far registered by the EC had complied with the directive for all political parties to present their financial accounts for scrutiny. 

In April this year, to show proof of how accountable the political parties are to the electorate and the general Ghanaian populace, the Commission in accordance with the Political Parties Law, Act 574, gave the parties up to 31st of last month to submit details of their audited accounts or face sanctions.  

It further requested the parties that participated in the Talensi by-election to submit their  detailed expenditure on the election to it. 

Additionally, the Commission per Section 15(1) of the Political Parties Law, Act 574, directed all political parties that had been issued with final certificates of registration within the last 90 days to furnish it with  details of their existence and location of their offices at the national, regional, district and constituency levels.

Meanwhile, a Political and Governance Expert, Dr. Eric Oduro Osae says the EC should crack the whip on the NDC and NPP for failing to submit their financial statements for audit within the stipulated time. 

In an interview on Uniiq Breakfast Drive, Dr. Oduro Osae said the two defaulting parties should act quickly by writing for an extension of the period to prevent the inevitable.
