Ashanti Regional Election Security Task-force meet political parties on upcoming limited voter registration

The Ashanti Regional Election Security Task-force has met with top officials of the police and political parties in the region to deliberate on how to ensure that the upcoming limited voter registration is conducted in an atmosphere free of intimidation and cohesion. 

The NDC, NPP, UFP, PNC, and NDP were present at the meeting with their chairmen, secretaries and organizers. 

The Regional Director of the EC Serebour Quaicoo took the participants through the Constitutional Instrument, CI 91 that was passed by Parliament early this year to regulate all public elections.

He said, the limited registration is restricted to only those who have attained the voting age of either 18 or 19 years and also for  persons who could not register when a similar exercise was conducted two years ago. 

Mr. Quaicoo said those who will be 18 years and above and are registering for the first time  would be subjected to serious scrutiny to ensure they do not engage in double registration as that constitutes  an electoral fraud. 

Mr. Quaicoo said the exercise is not meant for registered voters to replace their missing Voter Identity Cards. 

According to him, an opportunity will be provided for those who have misplaced their Voter Identity Cards to replace them at a cost of five cedis. 

He cautioned that only accredited representatives of the EC will be permitted at the registration center to ensure sanity. 

Mr. Quaicoo said nobody has the power to physically or spiritually prevent any prospective applicant from taking part in the exercise. 

The Regional Police Commander DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye, who is also the Chairman of the Election Taskforce said the police shall implement the rules and regulations governing the exercise to make it a success. 

He charged his men to be abreast of  the law and also arrest anybody irrespective of the person’s social status found to have unjustifiably disturbed the exercise.
