President Mahama inaugurates two ferries at Kpando and Agordeke to ease travel on Volta Lake.

President John Mahama, last night rounded up his tour of the Eastern region with the inauguration of two vessels for the people of Kpando and Agordeke at a ceremony at Afram Plains.

The two vessels are a ferry known as MV Damen one and a water bus known as MV Akpini Princess.

The objective is to improve transportation on the Volta lake.

The provision of the ferry is in fulfilment of a promise made by government, when the Chiefs and people of Afram plains made the request two years ago. 

The cost of both ferries was borne by government.

President Mahama's activities as he ended the three day tour of the Eastern region was parked. Even though he eventually arrived at Afram plains quite late the atmosphere was charged. 

The excitement was about the two new vessels, MV Damen one and MV Akpini Princess. 

The Damen ferry will ply between Kpando and Agordeke and will replace the MV Fourth Republic, which sank at Akosombo port in August 2009 whiles the Akpini Princess will also serve the Ntoaboma- Bridge Ano crossing whose ferry sank recently. 

Government is bent on replacing and rehabilitating old Volta lake Transport Ferries to ensure safety and reliable transport especially as the communities lie in the Agricultural area. 

The Chiefs and people of Afram plains two years ago requested for a ferry when President Mahama, visited the town. 

President Mahama, was hopeful that the two vessels will solve the transport needs of the beneficiary communities and improve their livelihood. 

President Mahama and his delegation had the first ride on the new ferry MV Damen from the Afram Plains across the Volta lake to Kpando Torkor. 

It was a one and a half hours ride. 

The delegation finally arrived at Kpando Torkor at almost midnight to hand over the vessel. The Chiefs and people defied the late hours to welcome the new ferry.
