Poultry Farmers predict shortage of maize 

Poultry farmers have predicted shortage of maize which is the main feed source for the year as a result of a long harmattan season. 

They are requesting that government imports yellow maize to fill the supply gap.  

A Poultry Farmer and Private Veterinary Practitioner Dr Peter Boakye Yiadom noted that the long drought will definitely have adverse effect on poultry farmers who depend largely on maize for their feed supply.  

Speaking at a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Food,  Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs in Kumasi,  Dr Boakye said interventions made by government to import maize anytime there is a long drought always saved the situation for poultry farmers. 

The Committee was in the Ashanti Region to inspect a poultry farm at Obuasi that was destroyed for an outbreak of Avian Influenza that hit the country last year. 

The National Chairman of the Poultry Farmers Association, Victor Oppong Adjei asked government to resource the research institutions especially those offering training for Veterinary Doctors to equip them with enough knowledge to research into modern and complex diseases that afflict poultry.
