Disarmament Commission, "Critical role to play" in 2016 The UN Disarmament Commission has a "critical role to play" this year as international conflict and tensions threaten multilateral treaties. That's according to the chair of the commission, Odo Tevi. Given the deadly conflicts going on around the world and increasing rivalries between states, he said it was a "very challenging environment" that was leading to a retreat from multilateralism. "In this context, the Disarmament Commission has a critical role to play this year in restoring trust among states and rebuilding confidence in multilateral disarmament." He pointed to the failure of the 2015 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) conference, to reach any agreement on a "substantive outcome" document. SOURCE: UN Radio
