Local government minister tasks media to report on people prosecuted for sanitation issues

Local Government Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda has asked the media to report issues on people being prosecuted for sanitation issues.

He says reporting on such issues will deter others from creating filth especially in the capital, Accra. 

Alhaji Collins Dauda was addressing the media when he paid a visit to the southern end of the Odaw River as well as Agbogbloshie and  Makola markets, in Accra.

The Minister's first point of call was the Odaw River. 

After assessing the situation, he instructed that more equipment for the dredging of the river should be deployed. 

He then moved to the Agbogbloshie market. 

The eyesaw along the main road  was a heap of waste yet to be collected. 

From Agbogbloshie, the Minister went to the Makola market. 

At about 8pm last night, the news team spotted the city cleaners  busily doing their work. 

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Zoomlion Ghana,  Gershon Sogbey said the company faces difficulty collecting waste during the day. 

The Coordinating Director of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Samuel Ayeh Datey said the AMA ensures that waste generated in the capital is disposed of every 24 hours. 

He  also said the Metropolitan assembly fines people who dump waste indiscriminately. 

The Local Government Minister Alhaji Collins Dauda reiterated that it is not the sole responsibility of  government to keep the environment clean.
