Wireless mechanic remanded in prison custody for attempted murder of baby

A 33-year old wireless mechanic, Isaac Appiah Senior from Worakese in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti has been remanded into prison custody for 21 days for attempting to kill his three month old baby.

Appiah is alleged to have injected the baby with a chemical believed to be DDT. 

The suspect pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted murder and is expected back in court on April 5. 

A sample of the substance has been sent to the Ghana Standards Authority for examination. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel Ansah, told the court presided over by Her Worship Cynthia Blagogee that on February 27, this year, Appiah visited the house of the mother of the baby and demanded to see the child who was then asleep in a room in the house. 

He said though Appiah had been litigating over the biological fatherhood of the baby in court, he was allowed entry into the room where the baby was sleeping. 

The prosecutor said on entry into the room, Appiah quietly unnoticed injected the baby with a syringe containing the infusion and left the room. 

He said the mother heard a cry from the room soon after Appiah had left the house and on rushing to the room, the mother found the baby wailing  with foam in his mouth. 

Chief Inspector Ansah said the baby was rushed to the Pramso Saint Michael’s hospital where he was treated and discharged.  

He said neighbours, upon hearing the incident, rushed to the house of Appiah where they found in his possession a syringe and two small empty bottles believed to have contained the chemical allegedly used as infusion and was consequently arrested and handed over to the police.
