The Ghanaian Times has applauded the Ghana Bar Association's stand on the Telecommunication Message Bill laid before parliament. The paper states that though the position of the GBA is no different from that of many other civil societies in the country, it still needs to be reviewed. It believes that the bill, now referred to as the “Spying Bill” is a good law but expressed concerns about some portions of it which it fears may trample on the rights of citizens. Both the Times and the GBA believes that passage of the bill is in the right direction to tackle terrorism, cross-border crime, money laundering internet fraud and drug smuggling among others to safeguard the security and sovereignty of the country. The Times believes the fact that the GBA has endorsed the bill and are calling for a review makes their claim a genuine and nationalistic one. The paper therefore commends the GBA and encourages all Ghanaians who wish to contribute to the debate to take a cue from the GBA.
