Asantehene charges GBC to remain neutral and professional in discharge of duties

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu has urged staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to remain neutral, professional and independent in their work. 

He said Ghanaians still depend on the State broadcaster for factual and accurate reportage and should do well to protect such enviable record and image. 

The Asantehene made the statement when management and staff of the GBC’s Garden City Radio led by the Acting Director General of the Corporation Mrs. Francisca Ashitey Odunton called on him at the Manhyia Palace.


The team included the Director of Ghana Television Mrs Betty Oppong Appau, the Director of Audit Opoku Mensah and the Ashanti Regional Director of the GBC, Samuel Kwatia. 

The team was at the Manhyia Palace to brief the Asantehene on the intention by the GBC to establish Garden City Television which has been on test transmission since the 7th of this month. 

The television station has the Porcupine as its logo. 

The visit was also used to introduce Mr Kwatia to the Asantehene as the Ashanti Regional Director of the Corporation. 

The Asantehene said the idea to establish the station with emphasis on Asanteman is in order as it will help showcase the rich culture and traditions of Asante as well as activities at the Manhyia Palace and other traditional areas. 

Otumfuo Osei Tutu advised chiefs and other staff at the Palace to always offer journalists from the State Broadcaster the conducive and favourable environment to cover events at the Palace. 

He said all the important events at the Palace shall remain within the premises if the journalists are not allowed to carry the news outside. 

The Asantehene asked the GBC to get in touch with officials of the Palace archives to have access to very important events and information to be able to accordingly update the minds of the public. 

The Ashanti Regional Director of the GBC, Samuel Kwatia said the establishment of Garden City Television is in fulfillment of a pledge he made to promote the rich culture and traditions of Asanteman. 

He said the Manhyia Palace shall be invited for the official inauguration of the new television network in May this year. 

GBC
