IGP launches project to check reckless driving on the roads


In a bit to reduce road crashes in Ghana, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor has launched a project to check reckless driving on the roads. 

In line with this, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Command on Wednesday had a team on the streets of Sunyani and some highways leading out of the Regional Capital, enforcing road regulations. 
                                  
While, on the Abesim section of the Sunyani-Kumasi road, the Police intercepted a Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number GE 2586 W for over loading.  

Sixteen unlicensed motorbikes and two tricycles were also detained.  

Interacting with the Media the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP Maxwell Atingani, said they were looking out for acts of indiscipline like irresponsible driving, over loading and speeding, wrongful over taking, and drunk driving as well as careless driving.  

DCOP Atingani made it known the initiative will be a continuing exercise and advised drivers to adhere to road rules and regulations. 

He again advised the drivers to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road.  He added that they Drivers should cultivate the habit of regular maintenance of their vehicles to help reduce road accidents. 

The Regional Police Commander also advised commercial vehicle owners to respond positively to their drivers when they report faults and get them repaired.  

DCOP Atingani charged passengers to report to the police when they notice reckless driving on the road, saying it is the responsibility of every Ghanaian to ensure that right things are done on our roads. 

Speaking to GBC, some members of the public welcomed the initiative of the police to intensify checks on the roads.  

They expressed the opinion that the negligence on the part of some drivers is the cause of some accidents citing the recent Kintampo-Tamale road accident as an example.
