British MP undertakes field and community tour of AAG’s women projects


A member of the British Parliament and Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, Ms Diane Abbot, is in Ghana as part of her schedule under the Westminster Democracy Program.
 
As part of her visit, Ms Abbot, yesterday, visited the offices of ActionAid Ghana (AAG) to discuss development interventions, tax justice work and some of AAG’s national level advocacy campaigns.
 
The British MP later toured the project sites of AAG’s women’s rights and development interventions at Kpobiman in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra region.  
 
At Kpobiman Women’s Training Centre, which is supported by AAG, a cross section of the 32-member Kpobiman Women’s Association lauded AAG for empowering them through no-formal education, skills training and leadership programs.
 
In her remarks, Ms Selina Avevor, Assemblywoman for Kutunse Electoral Area of the Ga West Municipal Assembly and President of the Kpobiman Women’s Association, appealed to AAG for support to complete a Guest House under construction at the training centre.
 
Ms Abbot and her entourage also called at the AAG Resource Centre where they interacted with beneficiaries of the human rights-based development programs and development advocates of the Young Urban Women’s Life choices and Livelihood Project.
 
Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Naa Yalley Cudjoe, Project Officer, Young Urban Women’s Life choices and Livelihood Project, said the project, which was being funded by the Norweigian Agency for Development Co-operation (NORAD) and implemented by AAG, was a three-year multi-country project involving Ghana, India and South Africa.
 
Ms. Cudjoe disclosed that so far 2,000 young women from Accra and Tamale had been empowered through sensitisation on their economic and sexual and reproductive health rights.
 
Ms Abbot was accompanied by Catherine Brown, Board Member, ActionAid, United Kingdom, Jon Date, Advocacy Officer, Government Relations, ActionAid, London, United Kingdom, Board Chairman of AAG, Ms Marilyn Aniwa, Country Director of AAG, Mr Sumaila Abdul-Rahman, Greater Accra Regional Programmes Manager of AAG, Henrietta Lamptey and Mr Benjamin Tawiah, Public Relations and Communications Manager of AAG.
