GTA gives to inmates of Navrongo Central Prisons on Vals day


Convicted and remand prisoners of the Navrongo Central Prisons in the Upper East Region have been feted with assorted food items and other consumables by the Regional office of the Ghana Tourist Authority. 

In a symbolic presentation held within the premises of the facility, the inmates numbering over 200 were inspired through thought provoking messages by various speakers to make them feel part of society. 

The Regional Manager of the Authority, Alhaji Ismael Hakeem, who led the team said the donation is intended to put smile on the faces of the inmates and share with them what they can offer especially on this valentine season, which is considered as a period of love. 

He said in every facet of societal life, social inclusion is of paramount importance and that the poor, oppressed, and the destitute can only be transformed for the better if society acknowledges their existence and lend them the needed support they deserve. 

He encouraged the inmates not to lose hope but rather see themselves as victims of circumstances. He said the authority is working to improve their socio-economic lives and will collaborate effectively with other concerned institutions to achieve the set objective. 

In appreciation, the Officer-in-charge of the facility, ASP Francis Deku thanked the authority for the gesture and charged the inmates to consider their being there as sign of good things to happen in their lives. 

He said a number of celebrated leaders of the world were prisoners at a point in life but managed to come out to pursue their socio-political agenda to become who they were.  

He, however, urged the inmates to identify their weaknesses and work on them to make them better persons in future to enable them contribute to the development of their respective communities. 

While encouraging others to emulate the gesture, ASP Deku outlined some challenges bedeviling the facility and called for support in that regard. 

Key among the challenges has to do with the expansion of its lavatory, which he lamented, was far overstretched due to pressure as a result of increased population. 

He also appealed for the establishment of income generating activities such as a car washing bay to assist the facility raise enough funds to run its daily activities. 


According to him, the tailoring workshop at the facility was under resourced and further appealed to corporate bodies to come to their aid by stocking it to enable them train more inmates.
