Fire guts Kumasi Suame Light Industrial area 


A fire outbreak at Suame Light Industrial area in Kumasi has destroyed property worth millions of Ghana cedis. 

Nine mechanical workshops were caught in the fire destroying eight vehicles, five containers containing car parts and other goods were among property destroyed by the fire that fire fighters from the Breman National Fire Service station took about three hours to control. 

The Church of Brotherhood located right at the premises was spared due to the timely intervention by the Fire Service Personnel. 

The Suame Police Station has invited a young boy believed to have started the fire to help in investigations.  

A visit to the scene by our correspondent showed that the magnitude of the fire was such that the shop owners could not retrieve anything not even some of the repaired vehicles that were ready to be taken away by their owners. 

One of the shop owners, Daniel Mensah said the workers were not around when the fire stared at dawn. 

He said the workshop is manned by a watchman who disclosed that, the fire started soon after a young boy had been driven away from the workshop. 

Mr. Mensah said the watchman is reported to have warned the boy against using the premises as a refuse dump and that the boy decided to burn the refuse to avoid being punished by the shop owners. 

He said the watchman realized few minutes later that fire has started in the refuse so he quickly called the attention of the personnel of the GNFS who arrived on time to stop the fire from spreading into the nearby houses. 

Mr. Mensah on behalf of his colleagues appealed to government to assist them with financial support to be able to restart their workshops.
