Tema General Hospital records highest maternal deaths in 2015 

The Maternity Block of the Tema General Hospital recorded 41 maternal deaths last year. 

The figure is said to be the highest in many years. 

Most of the recorded deaths were due to congestion, lack of equipment and negligence on the part of some expectant mothers.

The Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Hospital, Dr. Sylvia Deganus said this at a presentation of medical equipment to the Maternity Block of the Hospital in Tema. 

Items donated included wheel chairs, resuscitators, drip stands, autoclave and professional patient trolleys.
 
The Tema General Hospital was established in 1954 for Engineers and Planners who built the Tema Harbour. 

It was officially handed over to the Community in 1962, and it was used as a major hospital and a referral centre in the Tema region. 

However, over population has set in, making the facility to deal with numbers which do not conform to available equipment.

At a ceremony to receive the donation of medical equipment worth 48 thousand dollars by C2YA International, an NGO in collaboration with the Ghana International Bank in UK and RAHA Medical Supply Limited, Dr. Deganus said the number of maternal deaths last year remains a source of worry to the department.                                     
 
She spoke on some other challenges the department faces which affect maternal health care. 
 
The Tema Metropolitan Health Director, Dr. John Yabani urged residents to visit other health facilities in Tema to help ease congestion at the Tema General Hospital.
