Government needs more revenue to embark on projects- MP

The Member of Parliament for Damango and Vice  Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Adam Mutawakilu has justified the recent petroleum tax. 

He said government needs more revenue to embark on projects especially roads to the hinterlands. 

He explained that revenue from road tolls is not enough for government to execute the projects and therefore the need to generate more. 

He assured Ghanaians that even though things seem difficult now, the tax will yield  positive results which will benefit all Ghanaians in the long term. 

The MP was speaking on Focus Our Current Affairs Programme.

The Member of Parliament for Yagaba Kubori and also a member of the Committee, Ussif Mustapha said the petroleum tax slapped on Ghanaians is highly unacceptable. 

To him Ghanaians are struggling to survive in a difficult economy and the thought of tariff  increases make the situation unbearable. 

He cited the reduction of petroleum prices on the world market and accused government of insensitivity and called for the withdrawal of the tax.

A Tax Analyst , Benard Anaba also shares the view  that government has been unfair to Ghanaians by introducing the petroleum tax. 

He said the increases in electricity and water tariffs were all geared towards improving the  energy situation. 

He argued that for government to come out with another tax for the same purpose is double taxation.
