UN Secretary-General welcomes agreement on so-called "comfort women"


The UN Secretary-General has welcomed the agreement between Japan and South Korea on issues related to so-called "comfort women".

The term refers to the hundreds of thousands of women, many of them Korean, forced to work in Japanese brothels during the Second World War.

Ban Ki-moon said that he hopes the deal will contribute to improving the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The agreement was reached at a meeting held in Seoul on Monday.

The UN chief thanked the President of South Korea and Prime Minister of Japan for their leadership and vision, while also stressing the importance of the countries in the region continuing to build stronger ties, "based on the recognition of history".
