Custom Officers Intercepts Ammunition At Aflao In Volta Region


Ghana Police and officials of the Custom Service in the Volta region have seized one million packs of short cartridges or bullets together with sealed packs of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp.

According to officials at Aflao border where the arrest was made, the same vehicle has made about six entries into Ghana according to their records, and it is feared the same items were being cart into the country from either Nigeria or Togo.

The Custom officials revealed to Accra-based Citi FM the items were concealed in a compartment on the floor of the vehicle with the inscription - "Trust in God."

They said two officers stopped the vehicle with registration number KTU 444 XD at the border and upon interrogation pressed for further checks on the vehicle.

Following the inspection, it came out that the occupants have concealed the ammunition in the compartment.

The three occupants in the vehicle including the driver are on the run.

Officials of custom are yet to brief the media with more details.

Earlier this month a large illegal weapons cache including assault rifles and anti-aircraft ammunition, included 11 AK-47s, four G3 assault rifles, handguns and a light machine gun as well as large quantities of assorted ammunition were discovered in Kumasi in the Ashanti region of Ghana.

In an interview with Radio Ghana, the police said investigations are ongoing and will be made available to the press.
