Removal of allowances of trainee teachers best for nation - Ablakwa Government has defended the removal of the allowances of Teacher Trainees saying it is in the best interest of the nation. Deputy Minister of Education in-charge of Tertiary Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the allowances are based on the quota allocated in the budget for the Ghana Education Service for the trainees. He said when the quota for the payment of the allowance was worked out it could accommodate only 38 percent of the student capacity of the Colleges of Education, leaving an unfilled capacity of 62 percent. He said replacing the teacher trainees allowance with the Students Loan Trust will allow the Colleges of Education to admit students to their full capacity. It will make room for 62 percent more trainees and ensure financial support higher than what is under the teacher trainee allowance scheme. Mr Ablakwa said this at the Government for the People’s Forum in Koforidua. We bring you more. GBC
