President Mahama Asks Drivers To Adhere To Tonnage Laws 


Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama has cautioned drivers who ply the Adomi bridge to adhere to tonnage laws by not overloading their trucks.

According to him, excess weight on the bridge is a major contributor to the weakening of the bridge. 

President Mahama, cautioned the drivers when he officially opened the rehabilitated Adomi bridge to traffic at a short ceremony at Atimpoku in the Eastern region. 

Rehabilitation works was done at a cost of twelve point nine (12.9) million euros from the Austria government. 

The Adom Bridge was built across the Volta River at Atimpoku up north of Senchi in 1956 to ease the burden of travelers. 

The designing of the bridge was done by two firms; Sir William Halcrow and partners and Freeman Fox and partners and built by Dorman Long Bridge Engineering Limited.

The bridge has provided immense services to the people of Ghana. According to the Ghana Highways Authority, one hundred and twenty thousand (120,000) workers, traders and tourists cross the Volta River using the bridge on a daily basis. 

These people are from all walks of life especially the eastern and northern corridor of Ghana. In terms of vehicles, it is estimated that on the average over three thousand (3,000) vehicles of all sizes cross the bridge daily.

The Ghana Highway Authority closed the bridge to make way for repair works on the only bridge linking the Volta and Eastern Regions as well other parts of the country.

The famous bridge spanning the Volta River from Atimpoku to Akrade, was designed in 1957 by William Brown, of the Engineers Fox and Partners.

Residents greeted the re-opening with so much excitement as traveling will become less stressful.
