Central African Republic: 36 die in religious violence

Renewed violence between Muslim and Christian communities in the Central African Republic has resulted in the death of at least 36 people and wounded more than 80.

Sporadic gunfire was heard in the capital, Bangui today with journalists also citing multiple reports of widespread looting in the city.

In a statement, Doctors without Borders MSF, said its teams are working in the city's Mpoko camp.  

Some hospitals have been pressed to activate mass-casualty plans to cope with an influx of the injured.

The group said it has received 75 wounded patients, and the teams have stabilized patients and performed 15 surgeries.

MSF head of mission in Central African Republic, Emmanuel Lampaert, said it is sad to see violence of such a scale occur once again after a similar clash in October last year.
