Pope Francis makes historic speech to  US Congress

Pope Francis brought the US Congress to its feet in applause on Monday with an historic speech to both houses in joint session, the first time a pope has delivered such an address.

His themes included human rights, building a just and inclusive society, and the importance of confronting climate change, an especially tricky subject bearing in mind Congress’s blocking of President Obama’s measures.

He also defended the abolition of the death penalty.
