Police confirm receipt of notice from ‘Let My Vote Count’ on planned demonstration slated for next week

The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed receipt of a notice from Pressure Group, "Let My Vote Count", on its intention to picket the Electoral Commission on the 22nd of this month. 

PRO of the regional police command, ASP Efia Tengey said the Police will be meeting the leadership of the group on the issue. 

She could not tell whether or not the Police will allow the group to picket the EC as it had earlier sought a court injunction restraining the group from picketing the EC and Parliament. 

The earlier demonstration ended abruptly as the Police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse the protestors who were bent on going to the EC, contrary to the court order. 

Meanwhile, Radio Ghana has gathered that 13 of the 34 demonstrators arrested during the earlier protest by the Let My Vote Count Alliance have been charged and will be arraigned before court. 

Police on Tuesday clashed with demonstrators as they attempted to use an unapproved route to get to the EC in defiance of a court order. 

In the process, the Police had to use what it describes as minimum force to disperse the crowd. 

The demonstrators accused the police of being high handed by using brute force against them. 

The Police on the other hand said the protestors pelted them with stones and other objects. 

At the end, 34 protestors were arrested and later bailed.
