Afghan refugee teacher wins UN refugee award


An Afghan refugee teacher who dedicated her life to bringing education to Afghan girls exiled in Pakistan has been honored by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Ageela Asifi, a former teacher who fled Kabul in 1992, has helped more than 1,000 refugee girls in the Kot Chandana refugee village in north-western Pakistan, complete primary school.

She received UNHCR's 2015 Nanseen Refugee Award which honours extraordinary service to the forcibly displaced.

The agency praised Ms Asifi for her determination to educate girls despite minimal resources and cultural challenges.
