Government Warns It Will No Longer Pay Striking Workers

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, has asked Labour Unions to set up strike funds because government will no longer pay workers who go on strike. 

He said government will make proposals for a review of the Labour Law and asked Labour Unions to do same.  

The Minister was speaking in Accra at a Regional Seminar on Trade Union Unity in Africa.  

Mr. Iddrisu asked Labour Unions to shift from a militant posture to a more developmental one. He said the mistrust between government and Labour Unions must stop and called on the unions to educate their members on the Labour Law.  

In reaction to the Minister's call on Labour Unions to set up a strike fund, the Secretary General of the TUC, Kofi Asamoah said it will be vital for government to rather tackle the root causes of workers' strike.
