GJA eulogises former colleague late Boakye Nkyira


The National Executives of Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Wednesday received the family of late Mr. Boakye Nkyira, a former President of GJA, at the Ghana International Press Center in Accra.

The late Mr Nkyira, affectionately called Yaw Fraser, died on Monday, June 1, 2015 at after a short illness.

The late Mr Nkyira who most of media practitioners saw as a father and mentor during his term in office was elected three, consecutive times as the President of GJA.

The 20-member delegation from Kyebi in the Eastern region was led by Ayoko Abusuapanin, Etwieba Kawme Danquah Ofori-Atta.

They were received by past and the present presidents of the GJA.

They are Dr. Roland Affail Monney, President, Ms. Ajoa K. V. Yeboah-Afari, a former President of GJA who is currently a coordinator of the Ghana Media Standards Improvement Project and Chairperson of the Editors Forum, Mr. Edward Ameyibor, also a former GJA president Ghana, Mr. Bright Blewu, former General Secretary.

Mr. Monney said members of the GJA shared the pain of the bereaved family because the late Yaw Boakye Nkyira served the Association diligently for many years and most journalists adored him.

“The late Yaw Boakye Nkyira who was the former Abontendom hene and Ayoko hene of Akyem Akakom is generally referred to as our father considering the good services he provided not only to the GJA but individual members,” Mr. Monney added.

Mr Monney assured the bereaved family of the Association’s participation in the funeral which is slated for Friday, October 2, 2015 in Kyebi.

He pointed out that, the late Yaw Boakye Nkyira gave the activities of the Association a clear sense of focus and direction and was always there to remedy any unfortunate situation to ensure that there was an atmosphere of cordiality between media practitioners and institutions as well as individuals.

For his part, Mr. Ameyibor described the late Yaw Boakye Nkyira as a “down to earth” person who won the hearts of many media practitioners in the country.

“It is our hope that the ever merciful God gives late Yaw Boakye Nkyira an eternal rest and a better place to rest in his bosom.”

“In these trying times, we, members of the national executive of Ghana Journalists Association, would like to urge the bereaved family to take solace in God and to seek His comfort.” Mr. Ameyibor added.

The leader of the delegation, Ayoko Abusuapanin, Etwieba Kawme Danquah Ofori-Atta expressed the families gratitude to the inky fraternity for their support.


Mr. Boakye Nkyira was elected three consecutive times as the President of GJA since 1969 and worked as the former Editor of The New Times Corporation, formerly known as Ghanaian Times and the Editor of defunct The Star newspaper.

The late Yaw Boakye Nkyira, 81, died on Monday, June 1, 2015 while receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra and would be buried on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Kyebi.
